In this video we will be discussing HBP #3: Bring a loved one, friend, or doula for continuous support.

Continuous labor support allows moms to feel safe in their birthing space.

Feeling safe and supported in your birthing space not only builds up mom's confidence to birth her baby but also plays an important role in how labor progresses. Oxytocin is the hormone that causes contractions, it is known as the love hormone, and when we are feeling stressed/scared/anxious our bodies can stop producing oxytocin which can slow down labor (or stop it altogether!). Having continuous labor support can help prevent this from happening.

Make sure whoever is going to be your birth partner understands your wants/needs for labor, is familiar with the childbirth process, and is someone you deeply trust. Your birth partner should be preparing for birth just as much as you are!

Another option is to hire a doula. Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous labor support; their knowledge of comfort techniques, their understanding of the many normal variations of labor, their dedication to informed medical care, and their commitment to your birth plan, can positively impact any birth.  Research shows that support from a doula reduces the need for an epidural, increases the chance of having a vaginal birth, and makes the birth experience more satisfying for both the mother and their partner.
