The 3 B’S of Childbirth

What to do when fear takes over during birth?

Focus on the 3 B’s of Childbirth: Baby, Body, and Breath.

If your attention is on your baby, your body, and your breath then you are in the present moment and are able to manage contractions more effectively. Staying in tune with your body keeps you centered and empowered throughout the process.

BABY

It is important to remember that you and your baby are working together during labor! Connecting with your baby throughout labor keeps your eye on the prize! These contractions are hard, but they are doing the good work of being your baby into your arms. Visualize each deep breath that you take going down to your baby, giving them lots of oxygen and energy for the birthing process.

BODY

Your body will guide you into different positions that will help your labor to progress. Yes contractions can feel strong and sometimes overwhelming, but if you can reframe the sensations from “pain” to “power” your contractions become an unbelievable strength that you didn’t realize you had and that you no longer fear.

Remember your contractions cannot be stronger than you because they are you!

BREATH

It is truly almost impossible to complete any difficult physical activity without connecting with your breath. There is no right way to breathe in labor, but it is important that you don’t hold your breath or lose control of your breath. Resting your mind on your breath keeps you in the present moment, keeps you in control during what can feel like an out of control moment, and truly limits any fear or anxiety.

Key Point

Start connecting with your breath, your baby, and your body in pregnancy. Go for walks, sit on the birth ball, or find quiet moments where you can truly go inward and connect deeply with your baby, your breath, and the strength of your body.
