5-5-5 RULE

We always say the birth of the baby is the most exciting part of the physiological process, but it is not the end. Your body undergoes important hormonal and physical changes in the first 6 weeks postpartum that will significantly affect your health for the rest of your life. This is a critical period that requires a focus on health and recovery.

The 5-5-5 rule is an easy guideline to help you get the rest you need for your body to fully recover from birth. It also allows you to focus on bonding with your new baby and partner, as well as on breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact.

  • 5 days in the bed: Spend the first five days at home with your newborn resting in bed, focusing on recovery and bonding. Childbirth is an intense physical experience, often underestimated. These initial days of rest are essential for your body to heal, offering you a chance to sleep, relax, and connect with your baby in a nurturing, cocoon-like setting.

  • 5 days around the bed: After spending the first five days in bed, the next five days involve light activities like getting dressed and making the bed. This is also an excellent time to include your other children in the daily routine with the new baby. Activities like watching TV, reading, coloring, or playing with toys can help them adjust to their new sibling naturally. While the first five days were more restful, you can now start integrating these interactions.

  • 5 days near the bed: After five days around the bed, you can start spending short periods in other parts of the house, but keep your bed nearby for rest. It's essential to take breaks and avoid resuming all pre-birth responsibilities. Remember, you're only 10-15 days postpartum and still need plenty of rest. Take naps and limit standing to 30 minutes at a time. Listen to your body and rest as needed.
